What to Expect

Arrival time for Sylvania First Preschool is from 9 AM to 9:15 AM. Guardians walk their child into the building and to the door of the classroom. When students come in, they put away their coats, backpacks and lunch boxes in their cubbies, and put their folders in the teacher mailboxes. Then, the students wash their hands and put their name stick in the cup to denote they have completed this routine. Last, they find their crayon cup and take a seat at a table for a coloring sheet. We encourage the students to do these steps independently because it will give them great training when they transition into kindergarten.
Departure time is 1 PM. Students will be dismissed from the classroom into the hallway one at a time with a special song. Guardians line up in the hallway across from their student’s classroom. Teachers will assist the students as they pack up their belongings and sit on the carpet to wait.
The outside doors will be open from 9 AM to 9:15 AM and at 12:55 PM. Doors will be locked during the rest of the school day. A door bell is located on the right-hand side of the exterior doors for drop off and pick up for before and after care time. Please note that from 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM, students will be resting, and the teachers will be unable to answer the preschool door.
Students pack their lunch and eat in their classrooms. The Ohio Department of Health requires that the lunch includes one serving each of grain and protein, and two servings of fruits or vegetables.
Former families have told us how much easier the transition is to kindergarten because students have experience eating lunch in a school setting. They learn to eat lunch within a certain amount of time, to eat their growing food before their desserts, and to open their food products independently.
In order for students to enroll in Sylvania First Preschool, they must be potty trained. Students are encouraged to use the restroom during the day, and all students use the restroom at lunch and before rest time during after care.
We do understand that accidents happen, and we ask parents to bring an extra set of clothes that stays at school. This covers not only bathroom accidents, but also arts supply and lunchtime food spills as well.
